Hare Krsna all,
PAMHO, AGtSP,
I wanted to post a question for the devotees here to find out if anyone knows how to replace the eyes in brass deities of gaura nitai. my nitai's eyes--only the pupil(black) part of it is almost gone--however, the white part of the eyes are still good. I have got new sets of eyes from vrindavan, but how do i replace them on the deity? while white part is still in tact on nitai, how do i take it out and put the new eye there? what do i use to glue it on Him? Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.
Thank you very much.

    Dear Saahithya ji,

Haribol! Sorry for not replying this question earlier. I know exactly the problem you are experiencing. There is a way to remove the old eyes, but it involves dental hand-drills (which I have access to, but most normal people don't). I myself would not remove the old eyes. Often the eyes can be painted over to create the new appearance. Often, this is what most temples with metal deities with conch shell eyes...

I myself have painted many many deities who originally had conch shell eyes (were often cross-eyed, because the sculptors had mismatched the eyes, and glued them in place). The deities can look beautiful, and completely different once repainted. The pupil missing, can be fixed with black paint. Taking the old eyes out may damage the deities themselves, or the conch shell may be incompletely removed, which would put you in a tough position. Also, even if you got the eyes off, the new ones may not seat completely on the deities to look as good as the previous eyes did, making the whole effort questionable...

If you feel uncomfortable re-painting your deities, ask at the local temple if there is a pujari who paints the temple deities periodically. Often these devotees enjoy the service so much, that they are willing to help devotees with their personal deities...

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please do ask...

    Hare Krsna!

      Hare Krsna Prabhuji,
      PAMHO, AGtSP,
Thank you very much for the reply. Yes, your reply indeed answers all the questions.
There is a prabhuji here who i requested to come paint my deities' eyes, but i'm definitely afraid how They will look after the painting is done. i'm attached to how They appear now, and although They might turn out to look even more beautiful after the painting, i'm indeed worried how that darshan will register in me.

after reading your reply, i feel i better not try to remove the white part of the eye and replace with new ones for the result might turn out unsuccessful. still, is there anyother way to remove Their old eyes without hurting Them--other than using the drill? if i do have to past the new eye back, what do i use to paste it back?

what else do you suggest inorder to make Their eyes better? repainting, anything else?

      Thank you very very much.

some deities have the eyes held in place by a prange putty, this often dries out and when remoistened the eyes can fall out my radha's eyes used to fall out every now and then during abishek, i was always able to find them and ended up glueing them in place. A relative had a similar problem and lost the eye and purchased new ones and they didn't end up fitting properly, now her ladu gopal has a bit of a 'bug eyed' look as they're to big to fit into the sockets.

the simple black pupil is easy to repair when my gn arrived they had huge pupils, badly painted tilak and eyebrows, i soaked cotton wool in coconut oil and placed it over thier faces a let the oil soak into the paint and then it rubbed off. I then repainted the pupils using black paint and a toothpick, if you're unsure of how a new look may work use acrylic paint that is easy to remove and change, once you're happy with a look it can be made permenant using oil paint, i have been told nail polish is the most durable(never tried it though)

i wouldn't reccomend trying to remove the eyes as it appears they are secured by some sort of selant and may damage the deities.

          haribol,
thank you prabhuji. my nitai navadvip-chandra have pupils which are 3-D, that is, it isn't painted on Them, but rather fixed into the eyes. if worse comes to worse, the we would have to paint their eyes, and beg them to give us their new darshan.
          lets see what they prefer.

          thank you very much.

            Haribol!

As strange as this may sound, deities do change Their moods every now and then... Just pray for Them to reveal Themselves, as They already have done previously, and you won't be disappointed...

I think the 3-d eyes are made of enamel, you could recreate the 3-d look by using dimensional fabric paint (comes in a tube)

                Jai! thank you very much.
I can't imagine how Their new look will be if at all They wish to be painted. But, i'll definitely give the fabric paint a try and see if it fits in. If it doesn't, then we might have to go for new painting.
                Lets see what They desire!

      Haribol,
I have a similar situation with our family deity of Laalu (ladu Gopal). One eye is "bent" so he has been looking abit odd eyed for many years, but mum has got a new pair of eyes from India.
I think most of these eyes are held by a putty or "miin"/wax, so you can take it off and place the new ones by holding it with the wax again. Not to sure, but will find out in the weekend when we do it ourselves.
