Re: face painting ?
Thu, December 28, 2006 - 8:23 AMHaribol!
I can tell you what I used for my personal deities, and the deities at the Boston temple when They got re-painted. I used rustoleum enamel paints (beware: rustoleum sells acrylic paints that are water-based, which you don't want!).
There is another name-brand of paint that Srila Prabhupada recommended to Jadurai dd when she painted Radha Gopivallabha following Their installation (now, isn't the Guru Parampara system amazing?!). It is called "One Shot." It's available as oil-based enamels, and also as acrylics. Both have been used for the Boston temple deities, but personally I prefer the enamels (the acrylics basically dry into a thin layer of plastic, which can then just peel off, either partially or completely with wear). They come in small glass bottles and often you can get them in a complete set. I have no idea where you can purchase these, but they are still available currently. Also, I'm not sure if Srila Prabhupada recommended this only for metal deities like Gopivallabha, or all deities...
The good thing with rustoleum enamels is that with a bit of paint remover and a q-tip, all the old paint can be removed, esp on metal deities. So if you make a mistake when painting, or you want to rectify a past mistake, it's easy and fast. Just soak a q-tip in paint-remover, and dab it onto the old paint...wait for a minute, then wipe off the old paint with another q-tip (it will come off as a sheet)...
As far as marble deities go, I'm not sure which paints would work best, and prevent staining, but I can hazard a guess that the same enamel paints would be what is used (judging from the shine of the paint in photos). Also, for marble deities, you may have to remove paint, before re-painting. For metal deities, the opposite is recommended (as the thicker the paint is, the less quickly it wears away with daily bathing- a problem most marble deities do not have!). Also, the enamel sticks better to itself than to metal...marble I'm not so sure... :-D
I hope this helps.... Hare Krsna!

Re: face painting ?
Thu, December 28, 2006 - 8:30 AMOoops... I just realized that Gopi might have been looking for temporary face-painting like for gopi-dots, etc...I guess what I wrote can be a reference for later posts!
I know you can get colored tilak in Vrindavan. I think most pujaris would use this for deities in the temple. I know devotees who worship salagram shilas use different colored tilaks for daily shringars. Like Karnamrita prabhu:
www.salagram.net/sstp-Karn-Sidd.html
Another person who may know would be Jaya Tirtha Charan prabhu who runs the Shaligram Tirtha Pradarshini website, and has been a pujari (even head pujari) at quite a few temples for many years...
Hope this actually helps... Hare Krsna!

Re: face painting ?
Sat, December 30, 2006 - 1:39 PMI spoke with the pujari at my temple and he says he just uses watercolor paints. The Deties are marble there also, Krishna is black and Radharani is white. He re-paints them every morning, it takes him about 15 minutes he says. He said the paints don't stain, but you might want to test it for yourself, especially the darker or more vivid colors.
Let me know how it works out.
