This can be read in those two books which describe the different associates of Lord Caitanya and Lord Krishna. The Caitanya book is called Gaura ganodesha dipika and I forget the name of the Krishna book. He had the work translated and published... Back to the point, when I was reading this book, I came across a verse that stated that all the gopis had blue eyes. That put my scepticism to rest. (Red, black and white are still the traditional colors for deities, and the Goswamis' deities were all painted this way)... Hope this helps.
