How can I distinguish the difference between synthetic perfumed oils and natural perfumed oils when shopping for our Deities?

Re: Perfumed oils
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 10:58 AMI've found that most of the types available from india are not too clear as to weather they're pure essential oil or alcohol based oils. However i've found the oils available in candle shops to be quite well labelled as to weather they were 100% essential oil. Most commercially available oils are only 25% essential oil so you need to be sure to read the fine print. -

Re: Perfumed oils
Wed, June 20, 2007 - 11:38 PMThanks Prabhu. I was under the impression that one could only get these in India. However upon your suggestion I definately will check the candle stores.
Incidently the candle making equipement stores sell nice long needles for garlands. Please check my album for nice darshan. -

Re: Perfumed oils
Thu, June 21, 2007 - 12:28 PMI was searching for those long needles for a while and couldn't find them in sewing or craft stores so i ended up ordering them from India. The needles came with special garland string but i found it wasn't the best. I use corchet string i got from a craft store it specially designed not to get tangled and its smmoth texture allows flowers to slide on easily. one thing i've found is the cotton string can suck the moisture out tof the flowers so they wilt faster, but if you soak the string overnight the flowers keep better especially if you make the garlands the night before.
With the oils some of the ones from india are 100% but its really hard to tell, alot of them have odd wording like 'pure scented oil' to fool people. The only problem with the oils from candle shops is that some of the scents are not the best for deity worship like lavendar, vanilla etc. But i have been able to get some nice sanadalwood, rose and amber(nice for winter). -

Sun, June 24, 2007 - 4:33 AMHaribol prabhu,
I know where you can get long needles (as long as you want). In the US, I've seen them in upholstery and fabric stores. They are used for hemming curtain, and drapes. Some can be even 1 foot long. If I'm not mistaken, they are called upholstery needles...and they aren't expensive either...
Look for them in stores near you, or even online. Good luck making garlands for your deities...

Re: Perfumed oils
Fri, June 29, 2007 - 4:14 PMkrsna.com have actually got some attars on sale for deities etc.. I got mine from India, or the Iskcon shop (originally from India) although I know of a friend who has got some from a non-animal all natural shop, (a flower scented based oil for her deities). They specialise in natural things like this...most places will have something like this, or making your own could be even better using roses, honeysuckle, or jasmine, etc. I'm sure there are easy ways to do it at home for your thakurjis.. interesting idea..hm...

Re: Perfumed oils
Fri, June 29, 2007 - 5:35 PMthe krishna.com attars were a new addition, although i don't think they are meant for deity use as the have a roll on aplicator and the description seems to indicate they're for personal use. However krishnaculture.com has some that they claim are suitable for deity worship.
