Following is an excerpt from an old letter from a Srila Prabhupada disciple on the subject of Deity worship. Does anyone have a copy of the 1978 Archana-padati?

thanks,
J.

“Deity worship… developed in a fairly haphazard way in ISKCON with different standards in different temples. Prabhupada wanted someone to come up with a simple Archana-Padati but no one did while he was physically present. The first real standard for Deity worship in ISKCON was the Archana-Padati published by the BBT in 1978.

... As for the Deity worship you should have at least 3 aroti's per day as well as three offerings of prasadam. Before each artok you should prepare a tray which should contain the following:

- Incense
- A water archman cup
- A blowing conch shell
- A single ghee-lamp with camphor
- A five ghee-wick lamp
- A small conch shell with water
- A handkerchief
- A few fresh flowers
- A Peacock fan
- A Yak-tail fan

You must blow the conch shell three times before you begin the arotik and three times after the arotik. You can blow up all the demons in the building!! All the demons will be terrified...

In addition you should offer mangal-aroti sweets in the morning with water at least. At lunch there must be at absolute minimum some rice with ghee on it. And if possible also dhal, vegetables, chapatis, sweets, etc.

Haribol! That's good news. I would really appreciate borrowing it. We have the Pancharatra Pradipa from 1994, but I'm told it's very different from the 1978. Perhaps next time we meet I can borrow yours for a bit and copy the pages I'm interested in. This could be a good excuse for a prasadam/kirtana get together. :)

          Dear Devine Soul,
Pranam, I was a very great admirer of his Divine Grace Jayatirthapad. I was very close to him when he was around and slowly I have been trying to research anything and everything about him. He was very dear to me and then out of the blue he disappeared.
I am too looking for a copy of his published Archana Padati in 1978, and I know of a lot of other devotees are very eager to get their hands on a copy, so iam looking to actually to get it re published for the benefit for everyone.
I hope you can be my source of knowledge and if anyone has the original copy then I request them to forward me any clear pictures so I can have it as close to its original form.
          Kind regards
          Pranam

Hare Krishna. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada, who so kindly gave us news of Lord Krishna.

I no longer have a copy, but did for several years. It is not "different" from Pancaratra Pradipa, so much as it is much simpler. It doesn't have much in terms of quotes from Srila Prabhupada's books, nor does it have the many long prayers.

        It's sort of "bare bones."

PancaratraPradipa was a later attempt on the GBC's part to really standardize worship and care of Deities, mostly in-Temple, and also to guide home-worshippers some.

          Jahnava,

I've run regular online searches and also searched ebay with every spelling I could think of. I believe correct spelling is arcana-paddhati. Anyway, nothing's come up yet. You have the book quoted on your website - so I'd thought you had it.

Will post here if I come across it.

I have this book, is called "The Process of Deity Worship (Arcana-Paddhati)" published by the BBT in 1978.
I remember that before it came out, our temple received a letter asking the pujaris to write down their possible question which could be answered in the up-coming book. When it finally came out we were in awe and followed every instruction word by word. Few years later we were told not to follow it anymore because it had been edited by Jayatirtha das. Of course I kept my copy of it.
Everything that is in the Arcana Paddhati is found in the "orange books". The Arcana Paddhati is in some ways simpler and has few minor differences; like the number of circles while offering items during arati, or small things like that.
I also have a copy of "Arcana-Paddhati (The Perfection of Deity Worship)" by Gaura Kesava das, a very well known ISKCON pujari. He was also a participating pujari (possibly the main pujari), in the installation of Sri Sri Radha Madhana Mohan here in Atlanta. His version is almost identical to the Pancaratra Pradipa, only more detailed. Sometime I have consulted both books in comparison to get some things clearer.
I realized after many years that is not just about the manual, is a fact that different temple follow different standards and traditions, while at the same time we all follow the same basic instruction. The dedication and devotion that pujaris troughout ISKCON have is what inspire me the most.
Thanks to the interned we can see Deities pictures from around the world, Krsna is so merciful!!
            Thank you, all of you.

                Haribol!
I suppose the easiest way would be to photocopy it and send it to you. I am not sure I much it would cost. The book has 110 pages.

write to my e-mail and let me know if you want to do it this way.
