Chandan Yatra begins on April 30th according to my calendar, and was wondering how others observed this festival in the past i have applied chandan to my personal deities, but do not know the proper procedure, any suggestions are appreciated. I bathe/dress my deities every week should the chandan be changed more frequently? As well, is scented chandan (powder) acceptable as that is all i can find at indian stores here. Thanks and Jai Shree Krishna

Re: Chandana Yatra
Fri, April 21, 2006 - 10:17 AMHare Krsna prabhu,
I wish I could apply chandan to my deities, but might instead apply to only salagram shila as application and removal is easier and less messy. It is nice of you to offer your deities chandan for chandan yatra. For personal deities, I think you can use the scented chandan from the Indian stores. Most temples use only hand-ground sandal pulp for the deities, but the home standard can be different. It's your love and devotion that counts!
I am planning to offer handground sandalwood pulp to Radha Gopivallabha, the Boston temple deities for Their chandan yatra. We haven't had chandan yatra for years. We plan to have it in mid June, as it gets really hot here at that time. It's still a bit chilly outside, so chandan now might mean that Lord Krsna would catch a cold... :-(
Hope this helps... Hare Krsna!
Your servant,
Krishna -

Re: Chandana Yatra
Sat, April 21, 2007 - 7:49 PMThis year ChandanYatra began on April 19, as the weather here was till a bit to cold for chandan to be effective i offered a chandan abishek to my deities on akshay tirtha, and plan to offer full chandan to my govindaji when the wether warrants it more. This year i was able to find pre-ground 'real chandan' instead of the chemically scented stuff. Does anyone else have plans for chandan yatra. I've also posted some pics of celebrations from some temples. -

Sun, April 22, 2007 - 8:49 PMChandan Yatra at the Chowpatty temple is always well executed, today Shrinathji was covered in gold chandan as Sonar Gauranga, the deity of Narottama Das Thakur

Re: Chandana Yatra
Mon, April 23, 2007 - 10:58 AMYeah, Chandan yatra @ Chowpatty is amazing, Gopalji dons a new vesh every sunday for the pleasure of the devotees, quite a feat for the pujaris!! He looks amazing, in his Narasingha vesa last year he was hardly recognizable! Another one to watch out for is the daily darshan from Sridahm Mayapur, and from Sridham Vrindavan, the mood there is esp sweet celebrating Radha Krsna's summer pastimes. I esp love darshans of Krsna without his top, it looks so good esp with big garlands. At the manor the summer darshan are awesome!
Since its my thakurjis first chandan yatra I am not sure waht to do, I will test out the chandan before using it, and definetley not yet, its too cold, in summer when its nice and hot I will cover my Lord in chandan. I remember one darshan where Govinda was covered in chandan and then tulsi leaves were stuck all over his body so he looked green, very unusual darshan.
In Puri the celebrations are huge, (were the festival originated from - and the leela of Shree Govardhan Nathji asking Madhavendra Puri to get him sandalwood as the summer heat was getting too hot) anyway, the snana yatra there is equally wonderful resulting in the Lord catching a cold only to come out to greet the devotees on Ratha Yatra...the Lords pastimes are wonderful!!

Re: Chandana Yatra
Wed, April 25, 2007 - 4:31 AMOdd how www.kinkari.com/darshan has pics of this years chandan yatra yet www.vrindavandarshan.com (daily darshan) has no record of it! :s -

Re: Chandana Yatra
Wed, April 25, 2007 - 9:22 AMIt is odd, the vrindavan darshan site only show the utsav murtis covered in chandan, i believe these pics are taken at darshan arti maybee the larger deities are covered in chandan for a specific darshan only. I love how they cover the crowns and flutes in chandan as well.
From the looks of temples in the west have only observed chandan yatra on akshay tirtha (based on The Manor and ISKCON San Diego). Chowpatty temple has also begun jaladana, even though it normally sarts earlier than chandan yatra. -

Wed, April 25, 2007 - 2:38 PMHare Krsna!
It's still chilly here, and wet...so not really chandan weather... We haven't even taken the deities kurtas/shirts off, so what to speak of chandan?!
Soon...VERY soon... 8-)

Re: Chandana Yatra
Wed, April 25, 2007 - 5:24 PM"The Chandan Yatra festival is celebrated for the pleasure of the Lord, starting from Akshaya Tritiya. As the temperature rises during the summer, for a period of 21 days the body of the Lord is anointed with scented sandalwood mixed with camphor, musk, saffron. As the sandalwood is applied to the beautiful body of the Lord, it immediately cools. "

Re: Chandana Yatra
Thu, April 26, 2007 - 2:19 AMOh one quick note...with the camphor... apparently it stains some metal deities.... Radha Gopivallabha do not have camphor added to Their chandan as it stained Them when it was used once in the past... -

Re: Chandana Yatra
Thu, April 26, 2007 - 1:00 PMHmmm, the chandan i got is a mixture of white chandna, red chandan, mysore chandan, and camphor. I have used it to paint gopidots and haven't had any problems with staining. Do you know how much camphor was used when it stained thier lordships, and what sort of staining occured? Also dd you grind the chandan you used last year, or was it pre ground? BTW I really like the bead and flower 'outfit gopivallabha wore last year. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Chandana Yatra
Fri, April 27, 2007 - 4:20 AMI actually ground all of it from scratch...and so I didn't add kumkum or camphor. I was afraid that the kumkum would get onto the outfits or backdrops. I was told by a previous head pujari that the camphor stained. I don't know if this was actually true, of it was practical experience, or advice from another source...
But yes, traditionally camphor is added, and it adds to the effect of sandalwood...almost like menthol in a cough drop when you breath in!
Hare Krsna!
