I just deleted the Chamara topic by accident! :|
I managed to get it back though, although it's not getting on the tribe again...ill paste it again tho..
Haribol
I was wondering, how often is it that you sevaks wash the chamara. It does get dirty quite easily, but I don't know the standard for washing it - I just wash it when it's dirty...anyone know how it's done @ the temple? Everyday I think is abit too much for home worship, but I like to keep it looking clean and white. Another thing tho, it does take ages to untangle it after I have washed it, to get all the hairs seperate so that it's nice and fluffly like before. Is there an easier way then sitting and seperating each hair one by one?
On that subject I was actually wondering if the peacock fans get washed as well, I mean they would get dirty too right, but beacuse it's so delicate I don't think you would wash it..anyone no how it's done in the temple again? Personally, I don't keep them anywhere except the altar for Krsna's use, (gujji superstition actually, they say it's bad luck to keep peacock feathers inside the house except for in the temple room - not that I follow that, hmm) but I reckon you could brush the dirt off rite?...any ideas?..
-------------------
One easy answer... Pert Plus shampoo & conditioner, and a bucket of warm water... I know that temples shampoo their chamaras. I did this to mine and it's white, shiny, and fluffy...

I hope this doesn't make devotees laugh!

Hare Krsna!

hari bol, I do this too - I found it best to use a mild shampoo (maybe childrens, no tangle one) - conditioner helps in this regard aswell, but rinse it all out thoroughly and hang it to dry, and comb it when still wet, as it is easier to straighten at this point.

Your servant,
Krish.

As far as untangling it, sometimes, just vigorously shaking it helps dry, fluff and untangle it simultaneously...surprizingly enough...

    Sorry Prabhus!
Krish Prabhu, I missed that class, I wanted to hear Maharaja too! :(
Although I hear Ramesh bhai oza is coming this July to Crawley, and his disicple, Shyambhai, is coming to Leicester to do Katha as well..What do you think? Even though they're not Iskcon I think there alright informing the general public about Krsna, but then again, mixed with mayavad, its a dangerous combo...
hehe that did make me laugh, although I do use soap..I must try next time though with shampoo..
Sounds like we are discussing hair drying/washing techniques here hehe!! hmm usually I have to untangle and then fluff, but maybe that's just because I wash it so vigorously. I will try next time though, one other thing, how often do you wash the chamaras?..

      hari bol, pamho.

I was as and when, I've only done it a couple of times - the reason it gets so black is from all the soot from arati lamps - better to make smaller wicks with finer tips - less soot, especially good for home worship - keeps things cleaner, especially in the UK where home decor is usually wallpaper - not marble like in temples! (the ones you can buy are quite good, I've found)

As for the personalities you mention, imho - too much intimate pastimes - Prabhupada said one should read the other 11 cantos before reading the 10th, and then all chapters of the 10th before one approaches the confidential 5 chapters. This is purification, and helps guard against misinterpreatation, even then one should study under the guidance of a pure devotee, not go it alone.

      Your servant.

Yes, mine to gets black quickly from all the soot, therefore I wash it regulary. I've never tried those ready made wicks, I always thought they were frounded upon in iskcon...I thought everything was supposed to be 'home-made', never hurts to try though..
Prabhu, do you know the standard for peacock fans? Are they ever cleaned?

Apurva Gopal prabhu, if you're not lucky enough to have a cover...the shampoo-ing really works well...I used it on my chamara for the first time, and I was pleasantly surprized...

You have to use a shampoo with conditioner (or it'll get frizzy, and more knotted). Either a combined one, or separate bottles with conditioner after shampoo...

Sounds like a hair-care lesson...but in the service of the Lord...he he he!
