Hari Bol!

I had a question to pose to all the devotees that has come into my life. As you all know I live in Baton Rouge and there are no ISKCON temples here. Well a person that I know of is leaving the movement and wants to sell their Radha Krishna deites. I would like to take them and give them a home but a couple of problems. 1. They are 4 feet tall white marble. 2. They are 3000 dollars to purchase which I don't have. I had the thought to open a University House here near LSU and have a temple room with them as the focal point.

I would like everyones input; good, bad or indefferent please let me know by email, open posting or PM let me know.

lemme get this straight ... this person purchased 4 foot marble Radha-Krishna deities and is now leaving the movement and wants to SELL them for $3000 ???

My overriding doubt is why do people spastically commit themselves to such a grandiose worship when they have such little faith that they will drop the whole thing and try to sell the deities. It leaves a lot of questions and unsavory feelings when i think of it.

Yes this is my question also. But I can give them a home and take care of them since I am a stay at home wife with no children. I would rather that I or someone else take care of them rather than they fill a landfill.

If it is a question of worshipping them or letting them get thrown away, save them!!
You cannot let deities be thrown away or just left lying there, you must save them and do your best to worship them! However, there was one thing I remember hearing, when you take on the worship of someone else's deities you take on their karma to? (of the deities/worshipper)? I don't know, maybe I'm just speculating..hm

I have not ever heard of Karma with deities but, another option is that you can save them and a qualified and ready devotee can purchase Them to care for Them in future.

my family did this when i was very small. our family deities are now sri sri radha vrndavana-nata bara and i inherit them when my mata leaves her body. of course you should take them. it seems like they have found you instead of you finding them. deities will definitely choose you or reject you.
and as for this business of "qualified", really! what is that all about? i do not believe that you need to be a brahmana to care for deities. it really is about the prema bhakti and your personal relationship with them. I may not be a "qualified" brahmana to care for radha vrndavana nata bara but i refuse to pass them on to someone else or to a temple (as was once suggested, "they are should not be hidden away in someone's private home, they should be in a temple"). they have been part of my family for over 20 years now and i have a very strong bond with them that in so that i have been worshipping them since i was a 4 year old child. sometimes i get really irritated with people who are supposedly "qualified". govardhana puja my deities were on govardhana hill at the temple. arati was offered to them by a "qualified" brahmana and he threw the flower he had offered at them instead of placing them properly. one of them hit radharani in the face. i nearly attacked him right then and there. if that sort of impersonalism toward the deity is qualification simply because he knows all the correct steps in a puja, well forget it! qualification means nothing!! if the prema bhakti is not there in the relationship and it is a show, then those people should not get near a deity!
if you establish a relationship with these orphaned deities, do not give them up for anything! krsna will manifest himself to you when HE wants to and he will leave when he wants to. prema bhakti will keep him. you can always tell if deities are pleased or not by srimati radha's expression. she will let you know if your worship is up to her standards or not.
i hope this helps some. i also hope these deities end up in the right environment! please let us know!

believe me, you're qualified. They stand before you, as real as you can believe, they're wanting to come with you because you are their close friend and caretaker. I see them as extremely vulnerable and sensitive. Like an abandoned animal, a couple of golden kittens but way better.

qualified: selling Them to Karmis vs. having Them stay with devotees is a big consideration in qualification.

I realize that i wasn't clear in my first post, They should be with you, a devotee, rather than Them just being sold to some Karmi artist or something.

Sorry to jump down your throat on that word. I suppose it is a touchy one with me. All my life having been told I am not qualified because I am either not initiated or haven't been to gurukula or am a woman, I tend to get a little snarky. Thanks for the clarification. : )
PS: if we want to get into semantics however, we are all karmis. I believe however that you are refering to non-devotees. : D (I am a language student, words hold a lot of power and can be misinterpreted very easily).

Hari Hari! I agree with Radha-premaji... I wasn't a qualified anything when I embarked on deity worship...and I didn't get any encouragement from most of the devotees I encountered...but I kept at it. Today I am technically qualified, but in reality who is?! I still don't feel qualified, or on the platform where I can think I am worthy to worship my deities...but I try, and the story keeps going...

Srila Prabhupada said that whatever one does or strives for in Krsna Consciousness is never in vain. So even worshipping deities for a short time, is also not a waste. Better not to plan on this, but still, not a waste...Sad that the deities have to be "up for adoption" this way...but still, nothing happens without Their will...and it certainly has all of us wondering what Their future will be!

Yes, it's true. Candramauli Maharaj said that if you want to see if Krsna is well cared for, look at Srimati Radharani's face...and if Krsna Balaram, look at Balaram's face...They will tell you if They are satisfied with your service, mood, and consciouness...

              Hare Krsna! Good luck!

                qualification? huh?

funny how most of us are/were from meat eating families but some can so quickly adapt a smarta brahmana caste system mentality. it never ceases to amaze me. we should be humble - at least enough to be educated as to what 'qualification' means. fact is that doing puja and knowing some specific procedure isn't such a big deal. pujas are done in so many different ways all over India and even all over ISKCON. Srila Prabhupada didn't give us Hari Bhakti Vilas procedures for puja but just gave us the local Bengali way of doing pujas. Shows you how important the micro-specific details are. They aren't. Krishna will accept banana peels if you offer them with love (ex. - Vidura).

So the main thing isn't whether our mantra pronunciation is perfect or if we do all the mudras although these things are nice if done with love and Krishna likes them. but for us to get into this caste system mode is ridiculous and a bit out of perspective considering we are mercy cases.

So if you ask me you should pay whatever you have to for these deities. I'd try to work out a lesser price for them cause I think this person would have difficulty selling them for $3000. Your qualification is that you are concerned and willing to take on the responsibility. I would suggest though that you give some serious consideration to the gravity of inviting Krishna into your home. I feel that to accept Krishna this way is, like marraige, a commitment that you must maintain your entire life. (but a wonderful commitment none the less)

i agree with y'all. especially radhaprema ;) haribol sistah :)

and OMG. kamalasundri dasi. TAKE THESE DEITIES!!!! krsna is manifesting to u. he is so kind. 4 feet tall! nice. whether deities are 4 feet or 4 inches. they are all vigraha. serve them and they will reciprocate. my deities are my life.

and IMHO i think that for 3000$ is a steal for marble deities. mine cost 1500 and they are only 19". and they are gorgeous hehe ;)

                  love them.

Tell your friend if he's going to trash the Deities to give them to you for free, he will get some good karma. Otherwise he can list them for sale on chakra.org or somewhere, I'm sure the Deities won't mind.

      Haribol,

Well not really. I am the only one that I know of so far. Most of the Indian community are students that attend LSU and are not really interested in religion. It gets in the way of school most go to the Datta Temple off Siegen Lane. They have the main deity of Dattatreya who is mentioned in the Srimad Bhagavatam. I would like it if they could establish even a University House like in Ohio.
