Researching so-called "Idol-Worship".

Good afternoon. I am presently researching (as a Pagan and polytheist) the subject of idol-worship around the world, so...I was wondering if anyone might be aware of any primary source material (perhaps from Hindu scripture), or even from ethnographic studies that speak about the Hindu belief and practices associated with idols--anything at all! However, many fascets I have found associated with idol-worship/installation that are common are (particularly in the first two!): the inhabitation of the deity into the statue for his or her worshippers; some sort oif "activation" rites, such as the "mouth opening" ceremony from Mesopotamia and Egypt (withouyt these the deity cannot hear the prayers, or smell the incense and other offerings, etc.); but I have also found the belief in Mesopoitamia where sculpture's that carve the idols usually disassociate themselves from the creation of the image, preferring to view it instead, rather, as the creation of the deity, than of mankind. Now, while I would love nothing more than to interview a Priest for my research, I'm afraid (due to the often extremist and atypical level of skepticism among my peers) I would only be able to do so if I had some scriptire or ethnographic studies to employ as a foundation, and then I could rely on an interview as further substantive documentation.

you can find much information in the volumes of pancaratra pradipa. these are the volumes that we vaisnava brahmana pujaris / priests use in regards to deity worship. within these books u will find numerous references to other scripture regarding deity worship.

we also have books on the installation of the deity in the temple. there are so many scriptual references from padma purana to bhaktirasmrta sindhu and haribhakti vilasa.

but the pancaratra pradipa will reveal much in detail about the procedures and their origin.

    hare krsna.

Thank you so much, but please keep in mind that I'm not Hinduy (and certainly don't read Sanskrit), sooo...you may often have to speak down to me, so I can understant some of what is meant, I'm afraid.

Now, when you say, "we also have books on the installation of the deity in the temple." Do you mean YOUR specific Temple, Manu? Or, are you referring to a certain set of books that most (if not all) Hindu Temples seem to have in common oin the subject of deity installation and worship? Also, where might I acquire (rather than loan or borrow, because I always like to expand my personal Library!) a copy of the Pancaratra Pradipa volumes?

Oh, and before I forget... I have always wanted to get ahold of an English translation for the more well known Hindu scriptires [eg. the Rig Veda, Upanisad, and Mahbarata, which I hope I have spelled correctly!]. Now, I once ran into a wonderful source a few years back that was offering free (complimentary) copies of the Q'uran (the Muslimn scripture) to anyone who wanted to read it. So...I was justy curious is there's such a "thing" for any Hindu scripture? Just curious.

forgive me for not putting a link with my suggestions. i meant to :)

u can acquire these books (all of which are translated into english thanks to the magnificent work of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada) and you can order them from either KrishnaCulture.com or Krishna.com. both should have the books i mentionned particularly Pancaratra Pradipa.

they will also definately have a awonderful version of Mahabharata (the correct spelling :) and many other divine scripture in english.

and i meant that we use in all vaisnava temples and not just in the one i serve in :)

if u have any questions please do not hesitate to ask :)

        yours in service,

          >>>...they will also definately have a awonderful version of Mahabharata (the correct spelling :) <<<

Yeah, some of the spelling keep illuding me, but that's only because the Hindu scriptures are not that familiarthem, I'm afraid.

          >>>and i meant that we use in all vaisnava temples and not just in the one i serve in :) <<<

Is "vaisnava" a generic term for any Hindu Temple?

          >>>...if u have any questions please do not hesitate to ask <<<

I'll have tot ake you up on that! I'd love to visit a local Hindu Temple (as a non-Hindu, albeit I *am* polytheistic!), but they use a lot of specialized language I am not familiar with; so, I do not want to violate any of their sacrosanct taboos for their Temple. Sadly, I've enquired about visiting their temple, and even interviewing a Priest for a couple books I'm writing (and an article I'd like to write), but they never responded. I enquired twice.

          Take Care,
          Wade
